There are so many ways to do an apple pie, but I really love this one. The piled high apples are the star of this pie, as they should be. But, the buttery, brown sugar crumble topping is also an essential component in making in this delightful dessert.
INGREDIENTS TO MAKE DUTCH APPLE PIE
Pie Crust: If you are looking for a homemade gluten free pie crust, check out my recipe here. Otherwise, you can use your own recipe or store bought.
Apples: Crisp apples like Granny Smith, Honey Crisp, or Jonagold work well in this recipe. A combination of them would be even better.
Brown Sugar
Gluten Free Flour: I use almond flour in this recipe.
Vanilla
Salt
Cinnamon
Unsalted Butter
Eggs
You can easily make this recipe with gluten too. Just swap the gluten free flour with regular flour.
You can also make it dairy free by using vegan butter.

HOW TO MAKE DUTCH APPLE PIE FROM SCRATCH
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Combine peeled apple slices (about 1/4" thick), flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and salt. Pour into pie shell. (Get the recipe for my Gluten Free Pie Crust HERE.) To make the crumble topping, use a fork to combine brown sugar, butter, flour and salt in a medium bowl until small crumbles form. Sprinkle the crumble topping over the apple pie. Bake for 45-50 minutes at 350 degrees (or until crust is golden). Allow to cool.
TIPS
If your crust is browning too quickly in the oven, tent the crust with foil.
Want to make this ahead? Assemble the entire pie, cover with plastic wrap and freeze for up to one month. When you are ready to bake, remove the wrap from the pie, place it on a baking sheet, and put it in a cold oven. (This is important so that the hot oven doesn’t cause the cold pie pan to burst.) Bake for the frozen pie for 45-50 minutes.
